Bundeswehr Faction: A new dawn…

When [DSK] LieutenantK joined the Bundeswehr mod team back in August 2019, not much was going on, since no PM and not enough modders kept the wheels spinning. Para did some animations with the G36 of .:Jinjer and he worked on a Erdziellafette for the MG3 whenever he got time, while doing his doctor in medicine. K decided to fill in this gap and restarted the engine of our modding machine. After analysing what was there, the team decided upon new development goals:

The new digitalized Bundeswehr “Infantryman of the Future” or IDZ ES would be our new common dev goal. Since SQUAD evolved more and more around armoured and mechanized warfare, we choose to picture a Panzergrenadier company, reinforced by Jäger infantry and heavy Panzer support troops.

When the new dev goal was defined, the search for new modders started. In a relatively short amount of time, we managed to mass 25 Team members, of which 21 were newcomers to the team. It became obvious to us, the SQUAD community was hungry for some juicy German military power in the game.

Our first Map: Fulda Gap

When it came to our first map, we looked into the current and former theaters of deployment of the Bundeswehr. Since Afghanistan and the Balkans were represented by several vanilla maps of SQUAD and Mali is in the works by the French Foreign Legion Mod Team, we decided upon a Germany based map.

We remembered, the area around the city of Fulda was the most important strategical break through point. Two important Autobahn connections, the Autobahn A66 heading west towards Frankfurt and the Autobahn A7 heading south towards Munich, made the Area of Fulda literally the gate to Western Germany and therefore to Western Europe. Both sides of the iron curtain amassed the biggest tank armies of Europe here. After checking the area out in person and on satellite images, we found it would work for both: Armored warfare along lush valleys and fierce infantry combat along more than a dozen of villages or towns and on richly forested hills. This is it!

Since then, the team has put more than 1.000 hours into the Map up to now and we are just at finishing 1/6th of the whole map with „Battle for Uttrichshausen“. LieutenantK, Cpt. Brotzeit and Peer provided custom made buildings, partly made after originals and positioned at their real place. When it is finished, Fulda Gap will be one of the biggest and most detailed Maps of SQUAD – 8x8km or 64km2 which will be nearly 100% accessible (Blue frame on the map below), while the only map of a comparable size yet is Skorpo, with only a third of it beeing accessible for game layouts. Wait for it. We got some surprising locations up our sleeves there.

Kit setup: But what are we gonna fight with?

Yeah we got it. Maps are not as exciting to most of you guys, as the tools you are gonna be able to use. So let´s get to it now, shall we? All Soldiers will be integrated into the new German digital combat system IDZ ES. The character models will be designed accordingly (we still need helping hands for the characters and uniforms! Note: The general tools of each soldier, like first aid kits or shovels, will be germanised as well, but are not additionally mentioned below.

Vehicle park: But what are we gonna drive with?

Below, you get to know the planned vehicles for the Bundeswehr Faction. We are talking of the vanilla faction. Additional vehicles or vehicle versions might be added in the future. Besides the standard vehicles classes, we will introduce heavy logistical trucks and helicopters, since most maps in the current development pipeline of OWI and the modding community  alike are 8×8 km or 64 km² (incl. Fulda Gap). We want to give those doing the much needed logistical chores appropriate tools to do their job!

FOB and Commander Assets: What are we going to shovel Sir?

The Bundeswehr Faction will be able to utilize the following assets around their FOB´s and SUPER FOB´s:

  • MG3 on a Erdziellafette (Tripod with trench firing mechanism for covered firing)
  • MG5-ZF on a Fliegerabwehrlafette (Tripod for shooting from the stand)
  • MILAN on a tripod (wire guided AT-Missile)
  • 120mm Tampella mortar (bigger boom, higher ammo costs!)
  • Specific German vehicle repair station and ammo crates

We also have uniquely German commander tools upcoming: For example air strikes will be done by the German Luftwaffe Tornado IDS.

What else? One more thing…

We need your help! We already have an awesome team of modders. But we still need help, if we want to add all of the beforementioned somewhere around Q3 2020 or earlier. Specifically vehicle modders, character (player model / uniform) modders and animators are needed the most at the moment.
